He grew up in Hawick and at the age of 19, in October 1967, he enlisted in the Army. Ian joined The King’s Own Scottish Borderers, which was his father and grandfather’s regiment. He saw service in several tours of Northern Ireland, where he was mentioned in despatches, as well as in Berlin, Sharjah and Belize. Ian played rugby with Hawick Harlequins and also represented the battalion on many occasions. He left 1 KOSB in Colchester to become Regimental Sergeant Major with the 3rd Battalion of the 51st Highland Volunteers in Stirling, which saw him through his final two years with the colours. He joined the Dumfries and Maxwelltown branch and commanded both the Armed Forces Day parade and Remembrance Day parade, his last parade being Armistice 2023. Our condolences go out to Ian’s wife Ann and other family members; he is a man who will never be forgotten. Manage Cookie Preferences
